The Walking Dead spin-off focusing on Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) is reportedly still in development even though specific details surrounding the project remain scarce until now.

The Walking Dead, based on Robert Kirkman’s zombie apocalypse comic book series of the same name, debuted in 2010 on AMC. Running on the network for more than a decade, the post-apocalyptic drama is set to release its final season this August 2021.

Throughout its run, the series released several spin-offs – such as Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond. A trilogy movie was also confirmed and it will follow the original main character in the series, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln).

Aside from the aforementioned shows, it has been announced that another The Walking Dead spin-off will be produced – this time following Daryl and Carol. Both characters have been part of the main series since the beginning, though Reedus’ role didn’t appear in the comics.

Over the past years and as the story progresses, Daryl and Carol have become strong and essential characters. A lot of viewers were also rooting for them, thanks to their unlikely friendship. Their partnership will be further explored now that a spin-off following their journey is underway.

The project was first announced in 2020, with The Walking Dead's current showrunner Angela Kang and former showrunner Scott Gimple set to work on the show. Now, Kang offered new updates on what’s happening in her recent podcast interview for Deadline.

The showrunner confirmed that the currently untitled The Walking Dead spin-off featuring Daryl and Carol is still a go at AMC. Kang also revealed that the latest project already has a potential plot for the pilot and they have plans that they’re hoping to “work out.”

“We have pitched out what we think is the pilot, and it's all in development, which is on its own schedule,” Kang said and added, "Things are still in the process of being broken by beats and written and all of that, but we at least have a plan which hopefully will work out."

Both Kang and Gimple have already confirmed in the past that the spin-off featuring Daryl and Carol will be different than the flagship show. The new series was said to have a lighter tone and the adventures would be "more episodic in nature."

The project is still in development so the release date remains unknown as of this writing, though it is reportedly slated for a 2023 premiere.
