Rick and Morty returned with its fifth season on Adult Swim. The animated sci-fi series delivered a lot of exciting stories, including the introduction of Rick’s nemesis Mr. Nimbus and the return of Space Beth. But, the biggest one is the presence of the decoy families.

The second episode of Rick and Morty season 5 revealed that Rick created decoy families to keep his own family safe from those who are coming after him. Co-creator Dan Harmon and the episode writer Albro Lundy discussed what led them into making such a storyline.

Harmon said they’ve been already talking a lot about the decoy family plot in the writer’s room before eventually turning it into a full episode. He also noted that they wanted to make sure that the decoys would be different from other shows that tackled clones, androids, and more.

Lundy, on the other hand, shared the process of making this particular episode of Rick and Morty. He said he wanted to explore the mysteries surrounding the decoy families and show how they can kill one another. However, he mentioned one challenge in delivering this storyline.

The writer noted that the main difficulty in making a decoy family episode was that viewers have had a fair share of questions in the story. In the end, it was revealed that everyone on Earth was the decoys and the real Smith family was out in the space with Space Beth.

Meanwhile, co-creators Harmon and Justin Roiland talked about the success of Rick and Morty and what’s coming ahead in season 5. Speaking to a recent interview with Variety, the two teased that a lot of “insane stuff” were stored in the current installment.

Roiland, who also voices the titular characters, said that the fifth season is “one of the better seasons that we’ve had in quite a while.” Harmon added that season 5 has already given fans a lot of exciting storylines that haven’t been seen in the series in the past.

In a related report, the third episode is kicking off this weekend on Adult Swim. Titled “A Rickconvenient Mort,” the story will be dealing with something environmental – acid rain, in particular. In addition, the plot is another parody reference, this time with Captain Planet.

Rick and Morty season 5 is airing every Sunday on Adult Swim.
