From 2013 to 2014, Big Sean and Naya Rivera had the adventure of dating, getting engaged, and breaking each other’s hearts in a year. Five months later, after the two artists’ split, Big Sean released the catchy track ‘IDFWU’ (I Don’t F*ck With You), and many fans were thinking it was a diss track about the late Glee star.

Nearly two months after Naya’s death, online news bulletin, Vulture, asked Big Sean if he had any regrets upon releasing the said track. The artist explained that it was a tough question to answer because he is still processing the events that occurred lately.

“I don’t like speaking about any of it because I want to respect her,” Big Sean told the outlet. Big Sean also explained that the late Naya Rivera had made such a massive impact on people, and she’s done and achieved so many great things in her life and career that it was painful even to have that [song] or the thought of having it associated with her.

Big Sean stated that it was not a diss to the late artist and that he truly made the song and played it for her. “She knew about it, and she liked it; we had a breakup that was very public, and we were young, and we have forgiven each other and moved on from that. If I would have known something this tragic event would have happened, I would have never made the song.” Big Sean exclaimed.

The two artists started dating in 2013, and by October of that year, they became engaged, but their romance unfortunately slowly fell apart a year after. Naya spoke about the said track during her 2016 appearance on ‘The Real’ when discussing her boom, ‘Sorry, Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes, & Growing Up.’

“I talked about that in the book, in a conversation I had with Sean. I had heard that song way before we weren’t seeing each other, and it wasn’t even finished yet. I already knew that people are already going to think it’s about a relationship or a girl, so just kind of downplay that for me.”

Naya felt like they had both been through a lot at that point; Naya would later go on to lip-sync to “IDFWU” during a June 2018 episode of Lip Sync Battle. Months after the split from Big Sean, Naya would marry Ryan Dorsey. And Big Sean would move on from Naya to date Ariana Grande and Jhené Aiko.
