The self-proclaimed greatest swindler of Japan, Makato Edamura bumps into competition while trying to pickpocket a foreigner.

Great Pretender is the anime from Summer 2020 anime season that qualifies as fast-paced and stylish.

Episode 1 Great Pretender opens with a shot of a man hanging upside down yelling for help. He is stuck on the iconic Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, California. Meanwhile, a man named Edamura cons an old lady in a city in Japan. He uses the classic technique of fear to rob off the lady.

Edamura works with his partner and robs tourists. Later, he tries to con a foreigner. Edamura explains that it is important to win the trust and hand them the wallet. He adds that humans don’t like to let go of things once they own them.

However, he gets the shock of his life, when he finds out that the foreigner was able to con him instead. It is the first time Edamura has encountered someone as good as him.

He wonders if the man switched it when he first handed him the wallet. With all sorts of questions circling his head, he cannot believe that the greatest swindler of Japan was conned. He and his partner manage to flee from the building

Things take an ugly turn when Edamura finds the police under his building. He bumps into the same foreigner in a cab ride to the airport. Later, Edamura and the foreigner named Laurent Thierry reach Los Angeles and their journey begins.

The cast of Great Pretender includes Chiaki Kobayashi as Makoto Edamame Edamura, Mie Sonozaki as Paula Dickins, Junichi Suwabe as Laurent Thierry, Atsushi Ono as Eddie Gassano, Chikahiro Kobayashi as Clark Ibrahim, Daisuke Hirakawa as Thomas Mayer, Kenji Nomura as Luis Muller and Ryouta Takeuchi as Salazar.

The anime show is directed by Hiro Kaburagi. Ryota Kosawa has handled the story composition, while the music score is composed by Yutaka Yamada. The chief animation directors of the anime are Hirotaka Kato and Kyoji Asano.

Great Pretender is scheduled to premiere on Fuji TV’s +Ultra on Wednesday, July 8. According to Anime News Network, the series will broadcast on Television Nishinippon Corporation, Tokai TV, Hokkaido Cultural Broadcasting Co. Ltd., and BS Fuji.

Meanwhile, Netflix Japan premiered Case 1, which consists of episodes 1 through 5 on June 2, 2020.
