Jenna Bush Hager shared a painful memory from her past on Wednesday's "Today" show, revealing that her seventh-grade boyfriend ended their relationship after seeing her in a swimsuit, highlighting the long-lasting impact of body shaming.

The 41-year-old mother of three opened up during a conversation with co-host Hoda Kotb, saying, "It's so interesting because people really do hit you right where it hurts." Bush Hager continued, "I had a boyfriend in seventh grade who broke up with me after we went swimming together, after he saw me in a bathing suit."

As the former first daughter discussed the emotional toll of body shaming, she admitted that she sometimes still experiences self-doubt. "I feel like even sometimes now when I feel great — I have three kids, three C-sections, I feel really in my body and I think of it as a beautiful thing — I'll walk in a pool and have a moment," she explained.

Bush Hager, who shares daughters Mila, 9, and Poppy, 7, and son Hal, 3, with her husband Henry Hager, emphasized that the hurt from this experience has motivated her to raise her children to be compassionate and kind. She said, "All we want is loving children. We don't need the star kid, the this, the that. We want kids that are kind," adding, "The way you do that is model it."

Her comments came during a discussion about pop star Ariana Grande's recent response to body shaming. The 29-year-old singer addressed negative comments about her body in a now-viral TikTok video, where she stated, "The body that you've been comparing my current body to was the unhealthiest version of my body."

Grande explained that she was struggling with her mental health during the time people considered her healthy, saying, "I was on a lot of antidepressants and drinking on them and eating poorly." She continued, "[I was] at the lowest point of my life when I looked the way you consider my healthy, but that in fact wasn't my healthy."
