President Donald Trump might have imagined it was the right track for the right moment. Though, as a matter of fact, it wasn’t even close to that.

When arriving at an important campaign rally in Michigan, Donald Trump played the 1969 track Fortunate Son by American rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival. The loopy lyrics of the song coil around an important message to the society that has more to do with class and discrimination than war.

The release date of the song happens to be when the Vietnam War was at its height. The song offers an unfiltered take on the discrimination in the military that was solely based on connections and social status - safe positions would be offered to well-connected individuals while millions of Americans were being drafted to the front line of the war.

The legendary voice behind the song and the Creedence Clearwater Revival’s lead vocalist, John Fogerty said of the song in an interview that the lyrics are aimed to underline the “unfairness of class” through the topic of the war. The singer further added on to describe the song with a phrase, he said, it’s more like the old saying -“rich men making war and poor men having to fight them.”

The fact that Trump is being widely mocked comes from the fact that he has had his own history with the military.

In July 1968, Trump, a 22-year-old young man, was originally medically cleared to serve in the military, after the ending of the last of four consecutive student deferments. However, just about two months later, due to some unknown reasons, he received a medical deferment. The deferment was made permanent from temporary after some four years. About that, Trump claimed to have been diagnosed with bone spurs.

However, the crux of the story lies in that the credibility of the diagnosis has always been a subject of the question. Reportedly, Trump has not been able to provide concrete proof of the medical condition. Over that, he repeatedly keeps forgetting which one of his feet was diagnosed with bone spurs.

People and a string of public personalities are taking to Twitter to make fun of Trump’s ill-selection of the song.

One of the most trendings is from journalist Dave Weigel who shared the footage of Trump’s arrival and wrote: “Fortunate Son plays as Trump de-planes, an entry for the “nobody listened to the lyrics” hall of fame.”
