Bindi Irwin may have kept her marriage a secret, but the 22-year-old is taking a different approach to raising a family as she has publicly announced that she and her husband are expecting their first child.

CBS News reports that Irwin and husband Chandler Powell announced the pregnancy on Bindi’s Instagram account, calling the child their “Wildlife Warrior.” The announcement was accompanied by a photo of the couple holding an Australian Zoo baby zookeeper outfit. The Australian Zoo is run by the Irwin family.

In the post’s caption, Irwin said that she was still only in her first trimester but could not wait to let her followers know about this “special moment.” Irwin also added that she wanted her followers to be a part of this new chapter in their lives.

On his Instagram page, Powell called the pregnancy and becoming a dad the “highlight” of his life and said he was looking forward to this new adventure and chapter in his life. He also praised Bindi, saying that she would be a great mother.

People add that Bindi’s mother Terri is happy for her daughter, tweeting that she could not find the words to fully express the love in her heart. Terri also wished that her late husband Steve was around to share in the news, as she is confident that he would be happy as well.

The younger Irwin got married last March right before Australia implemented a lockdown preventing the holding of nonessential gatherings as part of its response to the global coronavirus pandemic. Bindi’s 16-year-old brother Robert walked her down the aisle.

Because of lockdown measures in place to stem the spread of the coronavirus, Bindi’s March marriage did not have any guests. Australia’s lockdown guidelines at the time only allowed for five guests for a gathering like a wedding.

Bindi’s marriage came after a year-long engagement with Powell. The couple had first met in 2013 when Powell was in Australia competing in a wakeboarding tournament. Powell was part of an Australian Zoo tour led by Bindi and he says that the two of them immediately had a connection.

Powell finally popped the question after six years of dating and right after Bindi’s 21st birthday. After the celebration, Powell says he took her to a “special part” of the Australia Zoo and proposed.

At the time of their marriage, Australia only had 2,717 confirmed COVID-19 cases. The country’s total now stands at 22,127 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with deaths at 352 people.
