Steve Irwin’s daughter, Bindi Irwin, managed to sneak in a wedding to her fiance Chandler Powell hours before Australia implemented a national lockdown that prevents nonessential gatherings from being held. The lockdown is part of the country’s efforts to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

Buzzfeed News reports that the 21-year-old’s wedding was held at her family’s Australia Zoo. Her 16-year-old brother, Robert Irwin, walked her down the aisle.

On his Twitter, 22-year-old Powell called the wedding “the most amazing day of my life.” He also revealed that they had to shelve a year’s worth of planning because of the impending lockdown, choosing instead to hold a “safe and small private ceremony at our home.”

Irwin posted about her wedding on her Instagram page, saying that she and her husband had to make the “difficult decision” to not have any guests at her wedding. Irwin said she wished her family and friends could be present at the ceremony, but for now, they would have to be satisfied with the videos and photos she will share.

If Irwin had decided to have guests at her wedding, the newly implemented lockdown would not have allowed for a lot of guests. Aside from banning gatherings that are nonessential for the next six months, the lockdown only allows five guests for a wedding. Funerals, on the other hand, are allowed 10 guests. All over Australia, gyms, cinemas, restaurants, and bars have been ordered closed. Confirmed coronavirus cases in Australia currently stand at 2,717. The number is expected to rise exponentially in the coming days.

Bindi Irwin and Chandler Powell announced their engagement last year. According to People, the couple first met in 2013 when Powell was competing in a professional wakeboarding competition in Australia. During a visit to the Australia Zoo, Powell found himself part of a tour led by Bindi. He says the two of them immediately “hit it off.”

The couple dated for almost six years before Powell finally asked the question. He proposed during Irwin’s 21st birthday. After holding a photoshoot celebrating Irwin’s 21st birthday, Powell took her to a “special part” of the Australia Zoo and proposed.

Powell called Irwin “the girl of my dreams” and called their five-year relationship the best of his life. After Irwin said yes, Powell said he was looking forward to “a lifetime of magical moments to come.”

The Irwin family currently star in the Animal Planet series “Crikey! It’s the Irwins.”
