Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are celebrating their new status this week as they are both now officially citizens of Greece. This revelation was made over the weekend by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who posted a picture of himself along with his wife Mareva Grabowski hanging out with Hanks and his wife, Rita, holding their new passports to his Instagram account.

Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks "are now proud Greek citizens," Mitsotakis wrote in the caption of the photo he posted on Instagram, with the couple sporting a smile and holding up their new national documents. Wilson found out about the extent of her heritage on Who Do You Think You Are?, as reported by HuffPost.

Wilson discovered that she is of Greek descent via her mother, Dorothea Tzigkou, who was born in Albania, in one of the episodes of the popular British genealogy documentary series. Earlier this year, Wilson's husband announced that he had been made an honorary citizen, and kicked off the year with a huge celebration.

Hanks took to his Twitter handle at the time to reveal that he is starting 2020 as an Honorary citizen of Greece, describing it as a more or less happy year. Multiple reports suggest Citizenship has also been extended to the rest of Hank's family, which comprises his children Truman, 24, Chet, 29, Elizabeth, 38, and Colin, 42.

For quite some time now, both Wilson and Hanks have been vacationing in Greece, which is often touted as the birthplace of democracy. The 64-year-old actor was vocal about supporting and raising awareness about the disaster relief efforts when a deadly fire ripped through Athens back in 2018.

The couple has a home on the Greek island of Antiparos, where they built their summer home after buying a plot in 2004. Aside from that, they purchased another home in Greece in 2018, in the Skala region of the Greek Island of Patmos.

The Dodecanese architecture styled stone villa has a terrace that overlooks the sea that Tom and Rita were enchanted by, per GreekReporter. Furthermore, the site suggests there is a heliport nearby, with the only way of getting on and off the island being a helicopter.

Hanks's most recent appearance was in the World War II thriller Greyhound, while Wilson will be seen in the impending Love Is Love Is Love, which is slated to release in Sept. at the Deauville American Film Festival. The couple served as producers for indie movies My Big Fat Greek Wedding with a budget of $5 million, and earned $368.7 million at the box office worldwide.
