A year has passed since the defamation case between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard began in Fairfax County, Virginia, and both stars now find themselves in different places. On June 1, after a highly publicized six-week trial, Depp emerged more successful, with the court finding Heard liable for all three defamation counts related to her 2018 op-ed about abuse allegations.

Heard was ordered to pay $10.35 million in damages, while Depp had to pay $2 million as she won one of the three claims in her countersuit. The couple later appealed and eventually reached a settlement in December, with Heard paying Depp $1 million, which he donated to various charities.

According to a source close to Heard, cited by PEOPLE, the actress was eager to leave the U.S. with her daughter, Oonagh Paige, who turned 2 this month. Currently residing in Spain, Heard has found more privacy and is looking forward to working and filming again. The source mentioned that the trial was incredibly stressful for Heard, and she felt mistreated. Now, with the trial behind her, she's focused on what she loves and is embracing a renewed energy.

Post-trial, Depp has concentrated on work, touring with guitarist and close friend Jeff Beck, who passed away in January at 78. The actor is set to return to the big screen in the French-language film "Jeanne Du Barry," where he will play King Louis XV opposite director and co-star Maïwenn. The movie will open the prestigious Cannes Film Festival on May 16.

An insider stated that Depp is excited about his comeback, and he believes it's perfect that this historical drama will premiere at Cannes. The actor has been living in Europe since the trial, dating but without a girlfriend. Depp, now 59, recently spoke about living quietly in Somerset, England, where he enjoys private time with his family.

Depp's career continues to evolve, with plans to direct the upcoming movie "Modi," based on Dennis McIntyre's play "Modigliani." He will also tour Europe this summer with his rock band Hollywood Vampires, which includes Alice Cooper and Joe Perry.

Heard, on the other hand, has spent most of her time in Europe, focusing on raising her daughter. A source mentioned that she spends every day with her little girl, visiting parks and enjoying family time. The actress will appear in "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," scheduled for release on December 20, and will celebrate her 37th birthday on April 22.

In a statement announcing the settlement with Depp, Heard admitted that the court case had destroyed her life, causing her to lose faith in the American legal system. However, she now sees this as an opportunity to emancipate herself from something she attempted to leave over six years ago, on terms she can agree to. She maintains that her voice will not be restricted or gagged moving forward.
