Thousands of individuals are reportedly in favor of Prince Edward becoming the next Duke of Edinburgh.

Express UK said that there is widespread support for the Earl of Wessex receiving the dukedom from King Charles III. It comes after a recent poll showed the majority of respondents chose the Queen’s youngest son for the role, which Prince Philip held for decades.

The outlet ran the said poll from December 5 to December 12, asking its readers which member of the British Royal Family should receive the royal title from the British Monarch. It noted that 7,373 individuals participated, and more than 81 percent of the respondents chose the Earl of Wessex.

The publication continued that about 5,990 people voted for Prince Edward. It added that some of them even left comments in the accompanying article, showing support for the late Queen’s youngest child.

One individual is said to have pointed out that King Charles III should observe the wishes of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip and honor his youngest sibling with the dukedom, noting that “those wishes should be respected.”

Several others seemingly echoed the comment, reportedly stating that the British Monarch should “fulfill that wish” and make the Earl of Wessex the new Duke of Edinburgh.

A different netizen, meanwhile, is said to have asserted that the Queen’s youngest son “would be the appropriate choice” for the position and urged the King “to do this now.”

Vanity Fair previously said King Charles III, then-Prince of Wales, inherited the Duke of Edinburgh title from Prince Philip upon his passing in April 2021. However, the royal post would reportedly merge with the Crown when he became King of the United Kingdom.

In September, the Queen and Prince Consort’s eldest child ascended to the British Throne upon his mother’s passing. The talks about the Dukedom of Edinburgh have since seemingly become apparent, with many individuals reportedly calling for the new monarch to bestow the title to Prince Edward.

The publication noted in the same report, published in July 2021, that the Earl of Wessex becoming the next Duke of Edinburgh has long been assumed.

This reportedly came after Buckingham Palace announced following his royal wedding to Sophie in 1999 that “The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and the Prince of Wales have also agreed that the Prince Edward should be given the Dukedom of Edinburgh in due course, when the present title now held by the Prince Philip eventually reverts to the Crown.”

Elsewhere in the report from Express UK, published Monday, it said that Princess Charlotte of Wales, the only daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton, came in second in the poll. As noted, 15 percent of the respondents, equating to 1,116 individuals, voted for her to receive the royal title when she came of age.
