Broadway star Rebecca Luker passed away at the age of 59. The Broadway's acclaimed actress and the musical performer were battling against Lou Gehrig’s disease, also called A.L.S. She died in New York City hospital.

The New York Times' agent, Sarah Fargo, confirmed the news. The actress announced last year in February that she has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The actress was married to a fellow Broadway actor, Danny Burstein, in 2000.

Luker took social media to reveal her life's rough patch and said that she is suffering from ALS while she has been getting some best medical care and support. She praised the 56-year-old actor, who is known for his work in Moulin Rouge! and said that he had been a great support throughout her difficult journey.

Several celebrities supported Luker on social media following her announcement, including Bebe Neuwirth, Ben Stiller, LaChanze, Anika Noni Rose, and Betty Buckley. The actress was a Birmingham, Alabama native who debuted at Broadway in 1988 and became a member of the musical drama, The Phantom of the Opera.

She went on to portray the lead role of Christine, which was originally played by Sarah Brightman. Later, the actress teamed up with Marsha Norman-Lucy Simon's The Secret Garden in 1991 along with John Cameron Mitchell, Daisy Eagan, and Mandy Patinkin.

She also starred in Show Boat's revival as Magnolia in 1994, which earned her career's first Tony Award nomination in the Best Leading Actress in a Musical category. The actress seemingly portrayed bell-tone soprano's character as Maria in 1998 for The Sound of Music's revival.

She received another Tony Award nomination after two years for her performance as Marian to Craig Bierko’s Harold Hill in The Music Man. Luker was also featured in Nine back in 2003, and later, she earned her third Tony Award nomination in 2006 for Disney’s Mary Poppins, in which she featured as Winifred Banks.

She also portrayed characters in Fun Home and Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella in 2016 and 2013, respectively. On her personal front, before marrying Burstein, she was married to Gregory Jbara for two years, and later they got separated in 1997.

The 59-year-old filmmaker married Julie Jbara in the same year while Burstein and Luker tied the knot in 2000. However, Burstein has two children Zachary Burstein and Alexander Burstein, with his former wife, Laura Toma.
