Despite the coronavirus pandemic still being a pressing issue for most of the world, it looks like Hollywood is determined to press on with a new normal. New productions continue to be announced, with the latest being an Irma Vep HBO series, starring Alicia Vikander.

Variety reports that the 32-year-old actress has been tapped to play the lead role in a series adaptation of the 1996 film Irma Vep by French filmmaker Olivier Assayas. Vikander will play the lead, with Assayas returning to direct the series.

As outlined by the publication, the series will be loosely based on the 1996 film and will have Vikander play a disillusioned actress named Mira, who moves to France to star in a remake of Les Vampires. As the film progresses, Mira finds it hard to distinguish between the character and herself.

Deadline quotes HBO Programming Executive Vice President Francesca Orsi as being excited about the project. Orsi said that HBO “jumped” at the opportunity to work with both Vikander and Assayas.

According to Orsi, Vikander is a versatile actress who is recognized by her peers. Meanwhile, she described Assayas as a master filmmaker that is able to balance drama and lightheartedness. She also expressed her confidence in the vision that both Vikander and Assayas would bring to the project.

Vikander, for her part, expressed her excitement to work with Assayas, who she says she has been a long-time admirer of. She also said that this adaptation would expand the universe of the original Irma Vep.

In his statement, Assayas thanked Vikander, HBO, and production company A24 for giving him the opportunity to expand on the universe of his 1996 film. He promised that the series would capture the zeitgeist as effectively as the film did.

Irma Vep is just one of the many shows going into production even as the world is adapting to the new normal of entertainment brought about by the global coronavirus pandemic. Streaming has become the preferred medium, and companies are moving quickly to adapt.

Streaming giant Netflix, for instance, recently announced a slate of seven new originals that will be produced in the United Kingdom. Actors Rowan Atkinson and Andy Serkis, as well as film director Sam Mendes, are either helming, producing, or starring in these projects.

Mendes, for instance, will be executive producing a football comedy series titled The Red Zone. Despite being about football, the show is described as not being about football.

On the other hand, Atkinson stars in Man vs. Bee, for which he is also the creator. He will be playing a man at odds with a bee as he tries to fulfill his duties as a housesitter of an opulent mansion.

Finally, Serkis will serve as executive producer on the series adaptation of Sally Green’s Half Bad books.
