The train isn’t stopping anytime soon for the animated film Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train as the movie is now the international market’s second highest-earning movie, powering past Christopher Nolan’s Tenet.

Deadline reports that Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train has now earned $310 million worldwide, overtaking Tenet’s $303.5 million international take. The animated film managed to accomplish this in its ninth weekend in theaters, with returns coming from Japan, Vietnam, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

The publication also points out that Tenet is not the only film that Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train is set to overtake. Once official numbers come out of Japan, the Demon Slayer movie is expected to unseat Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away as Japan’s highest-grossing film.

In November, when Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train became the biggest IMAX movie in Japan, it had already earned $230 million. Current record-hold Spirited Away’s box office take was at $294 million.

Bohemian Rhapsody was yet another film that Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train overtook when it became Japan’s biggest IMAX movie. In its first 30 days, Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train earned $14.2 million from IMAX screenings, overtaking the $13 million earned by Bohemian Rhapsody in 135 days.

Forbes also points out that Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train enjoyed a 49 percent jump in ticket sales in Japan this weekend, bringing in $9.4 million in revenue. The film’s longevity all but ensures it taking the crown from Spirited Away soon.

The publication also took note of another animated film performing well in the Chinese market in particular. Forbes says The Croods: A New Age earned $6.6 million on its third week in Chinese theaters, bringing its cumulative total to $46 million and taking it past Mulan’s $41 million take.

Early on in Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train’s success, a 2021 United States theatrical run was floated, but that plan will depend heavily on how the United States will be faring against the global coronavirus pandemic.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention update for Dec. 13, there are now 15,932,116 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country. The number of people that have died from COVID-19 is now at 296,818.

Whether Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train also gets to play in other markets also depends on the state of the world with regards to the pandemic. According to the World Health Organization’s update for Dec. 13, the world now has 70,461,926 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Deaths are now at 1,599,704 people.
