The famous Princess Diana engagement ring given by Prince Charles has been handed down to Kate Middleton as the sapphire and diamond ring was used by Prince William to ask for her hand in marriage.

But apparently, it was not so at the very beginning of the story of the ring in the hands of royal brothers Prince William and Prince Harry.

According to sources, after the untimely death of Princess Diana, the brothers were ordered to choose jewelry from their mother’s personal collection to keep and use in the future.

Prince William was said to have chosen a Cartier watch while Prince Harry chose a set of diamonds and the sapphire engagement ring.

When William popped the question to Kate Middleton, Prince Harry gave up the ring to his older brother as there was also an agreement between the two that the first one to get married will get the ring.

“They had an agreement that whoever got engaged first would have Diana’s ring – and of course that was William and Kate,” A source told Mirror UK.

The ring ended up on Kate Middleton’s ring finger, where it was made more famous for making history twice.

But this sacrifice meant that Prince Harry’s own bride would have to settle for an unknown bespoke ring, quite the opposite of the sapphire and diamond ring on Kate.

Meghan Markle, Prince Harry’s wife, was given an engagement ring by the Prince using a diamond from Botswana and diamonds from Princess Diana’s personal collection.

The ring was simple but very meaningful to Harry, but Meghan Markle had it change in the early months of their marriage.

Now, royal palace insiders believe that Meghan Markle is not handling this information very well, believing that the Duchess of Sussex is demanding the ring to be hers.

With the ongoing rift between the Sussex’s and the Cambridges, it's unlikely that Meghan Markle would stoop so low as to steal Kate’s thunder.

Prince Harry has made sure to give Meghan Markle a beautiful ring and something that comes close to his heart, as the diamonds on her once simple engagement ring meant so much to him.

The idea of Meghan Markle changing the ring to make it more ‘glitzy’ was heavily criticized and believed to be a form of jealousy to the more prestigious sapphire ring of Kate Middleton.

Now, the two rings are almost at the same price, over $400,000 each, but the history behind the sapphire ring is irreplaceable.
