Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down from royal duties on Mar. 31 this year after finishing off their final engagements. Many royal followers wonder whether Harry is still in the British throne’s line of succession or not.

It is now clear that Harry is no longer a senior royal member and will not represent his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II in a royal capacity. However, the Duke of Sussex still retains his position, as far as the line of succession is concerned.

King Edward VIII was the last member of the Royal Family who was thrown off from the line of succession in Britain. It happened when he abdicated the throne to marry the twice-divorced American Wallis Simpson in the year 1936. The incident sparked a constitutional crisis in Britain at that time.

Harry is sixth in line to the throne at present after Prince Charles his father, Prince William, his brother, and his brother’s three kids, The News International reports. It also means that the “Megxit” has not affected the Duke’s succession line.

After their exit, Prince Harry and Markle have lost their eligibility to receive public funding. Also, they cannot represent the monarch in a royal capacity anymore.

The couple has been also asked to pay back £2.4 million money taken from the Sovereign Grant to refurbish Frogmore Cottage, their home. It remains their official residence in the United Kingdom.

The Prince had remarked that he is “taking a leap of faith” while declaring his intention to not continue as a working royal. He added that it was their wish to continue to serve Queen Elizabeth II, his military associations, and the Commonwealth without public funding.

However, since that was not possible he has accepted the new arrangement. It appears that Harry was perhaps indicating the tough negotiations he and his wife had to carry out with the monarch and the rest of the Royal Family.

Eventually, it was agreed that the couple could start with their new life after Mar. 31. It is reported that Buckingham Palace could be reviewing the couple’s new working arrangements after a year, Daily Express reports.

It was decided by the Commonwealth leaders in 2011 to agree in altering the British succession laws so that sons, as well as, daughters in the line could enjoy the same right to the throne.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have now shifted to Los Angeles, California. They have launched their charity initiative called Archewell. However, like most other people, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s plan to launch their new ventures in the United States is shelved for the moment amid the coronavirus pandemic.
