Queen Elizabeth II is known as the longest-reigning sovereign in British history, she has been in the throne for seven decades now and at the age of 94, the Queen has seen history being written.

The British monarchy is not limited to the United Kingdom alone, it has numerous countries under its rule, referring to them as ‘Commonwealth’ countries.

As time goes by, many of these commonwealth countries have petitioned to become Republic nations, meaning, that they are no longer under the British ruling monarchy and thus, no longer considers the Queen as head of state.

It has been revealed that the country of Barbados is calling to be separated from Britain, aiming to be a republic by November 2021.

This action will thus see Queen Elizabeth II no longer the head of state of Barbados.

Dame Sandra Mason, Barbados’s Governor-General, released a statement regarding the appeal of the country to be a Republic.

In the statement she released, the people of Barbados are asking for a ‘Barbadian head of state’. Technically, the country has become independent from Britain in 1966 but Queen Elizabeth is still considered as the constitutional monarch.

Dame Mason continued to say on her statement that, "The time has come to fully leave our colonial past behind. This is the ultimate statement of confidence in who we are and what we are capable of achieving. Hence, Barbados will take the next logical step toward full sovereignty and become a Republic by the time we celebrate our 55th Anniversary of Independence.”

Jamaica is looking to become a Republic as well. The country is also looking at separating themselves from the rule of Queen Elizabeth II as their constitutional monarch.

Many of the Caribbean countries have become Republics already, such as Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica and Guyana.

The decision of the Barbadian government to transition to a Republic country does not come as a shock. Barbados has been petitioning for its country to become a republic for decades.

Last 2003 they passed their last appeals court that was based on the London appeals court to a more local court of justice.

The palace has released a statement upon they explained the ‘unique role’ the Queen plays in Barbados.

They explained on their statements that the Queen acts as a ceremonial role as the Queen of Barbados, and that the Governor-General of the island nation has always been in close contact with the Queen and updates her on everything.

Barbados aims to become a Republic nation in November 2021.
