Although Halle Berry started her showbiz career as a model, she is regarded as one of Hollywood’s most versatile actresses. The actress reveals why winning an Academy Award was a big “heartbreak” for her.

The Catwoman actress also competed in renowned pageants like the Miss World and Miss USA in the past. She has been seen in a variety of riles starting from a drug addict in the film Jungle Fever to her character in the X-Men franchise.

Berry made history in 2002 by winning an Oscar in the category of Best Actress for her role in the movie Monster’s Ball. She was not only the first Black woman to win an Academy Award in this category but is the only one to have done so to date.

Yet, the versatile actress has opened up about why winning the Oscar has been one of the “biggest heartbreaks” in her life. Incidentally, another Black actor Denzel Washington also bagged the Best Actor Academy Award for the film Training Day in the same year.

While other Black actresses have got nominations in the same category, none of them won it in almost two decades, the actress told in an interview to Variety

Berry wonders why other Black Women could not take home an Oscar even when they should have done so. She thinks it has got something to do with the thought that there is no place for an actress like her.

After her Academy-award winning performance in Monster’s Ball, Halle Berry got an opportunity to play the character of Jinx in the James Bond film titled Die Another Day with Pierce Brosnan.

Her role became so popular that the producers of the franchise thought to produce a spinoff film with Jinx as the central character. However, the film never saw the light of the day as MGM disagreed with a budget of $80 million.

The X-Men actress felt it was extremely disillusioning for her. That was because the film was a progressive one and ahead of its time. Yet, no one was willing to take that kind of risk with a female action star who was also a Black.

She feels the curse for winning an Oscar was real for her, particularly because she became the first Black female actress to win an Oscar in the category of the Best Actress. Even with her years of versatility and acting skills, no producer was ready to take a risk on her.

The actress said thus it became her “biggest heartbreaks.” Halle Berry eventually realized that just because she bagged an Oscar did not mean there would be a place for her by magic. She had to continue struggling even after that accolade, Showbiz Cheat Sheet reports.
