The Netflix deal that went down between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has been groundbreaking news. Signing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to a streaming platform has been a first in history, as two royals dive into a more liberalistic platform.

Of course, the deal did not come cheap for the streaming giant. Sources have claimed that Netflix had to shell out $150 million to sign Harry and Meghan Markle.

Despite this deal not being the biggest fee, Netflix had to shell out, it is still amongst the top ones. But the question of Why the royals immediately signed a deal with Netflix is a wonder to many.

In a recent talk between royal experts, Netflix was one of the many considerations the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had in mind. But, signing an exclusive deal with the streaming giant was not their first option as a source of income.

Both Harry and Meghan, who signed with talent agency Henry Walker in New York, were keen to be key speakers for multiple charities and organizations.

They signed with Henry Walker for its exclusivity as well as the talents signed to the agency, with the likes of Barack and Michelle Obama and the Clinton’s, its clear as day why the Sussex’s signed with the talent agency.

Their decision to sign with Netflix came in after the couple decidedly purchased a sprawling estate in an exclusive subdivision in Montecito, Santa Barbara, California.

Harry and Meghan Markle bought a $14.7 million, nine-bedroom, and 16 bathroom mansion. The couple had to take out an $8 million mortgage. The rumors of Prince Charles financing the recent purchase is not true, and according to sources it was from the couple’s own pockets.

ITV producer Lizzie Robinson commented that "Netflix will be a nice payday. That was a major part of it, I think. They have a huge house they now have to pay for, and supposedly it is not coming from Prince Charles anymore. It is not just this mansion they have to pay for, which they have a whopping great mortgage on, reportedly £7.5million.”

The couple is also in debt to the UK government as they spent over $3 million on the renovations for their home in London, Frogmore Cottage. The British taxpayers have to pay for their renovations and a few months after the completion the Sussex’ decided to leave their royal duties.

The couple is currently working on paying off their debt with the British taxpayers, they have agreed to pay $27,000 a month for the refurbishments of Frogmore Cottage.
