The upcoming "Mulan" live-action movie will be an epic tale. Only, it's not going to be the story most Disney fans might remember because it will not follow the same plot as the 1998 animated version.

"Mulan" actor Utkarsh Ambudkar confirmed via Indiewire that the live-action movie, which is up for release in theaters in 2020, will show a new story and a new take on the legend of the Chinese war heroine. Ambudkar expressed that this might just be the best live-action Disney movie. He's also confident that it will make an impact among young girls, especially in the Asian American community.

The actor also said that he plays a monk in the "Mulan" live-action. However, he refused to say anything more about the film since he's bounded by his contract with Disney.

In 2018, Disney tapped Chinese star Gong Li to play the villain in "Mulan." According to the Hollywood Reporter, her character is a powerful witch but no other details were revealed about this secretive addition. The cartoon version didn't have a female villain to pit against the legendary female warrior. This was the first confirmation that the "Mulan" live-action will deviate from the 1998 film.

But Disney also added Jason Lee Scott to play the other villain. The actor will take on the role of Bori Khan, the warrior who wants to avenge his father's death. The character is also not part of the animated movie.

Despite the changes, "Mulan" is still expected to follow the core story, where she disguises herself as a man so she could take the place of her ailing father in the Imperial Army. Liu Yifei will play Mulan in the upcoming film.

Liu lived part of her life in New York, where her single mom raised her. Her father worked as a French professor at China's Wuhan University before joining the diplomatic corps in Paris. The young star also lived in France with her dad while she was growing up. She moved to Beijing at 15 to train at the Beijing Film Academy.

The actress has worked with Jackie Chan and her "Mulan" co-star Jet Li in the Hollywood movie "The Forbidden Kingdom." She also starred with Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christiansen in the film "Outcast."

Meanwhile, aside from Ambudkar, Liu, Li, Scott and Lee, "Mulan" will also feature Donnie Yen, Ron Yuan, Yoson Ang, Xana Tang and Chum Ehelepola. Niki Caro ("The Zookeeper's Wife") directed the movie from a screenplay by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek. Disney will release "Mulan" in theaters on March 27, 2020.
