David Byrne made headlines and received backlash from fans and followers last week. Following the outrage, the British singer released a statement regarding the clip that went viral.

The 68-year-old star was seen impersonating Black people by applying brown and black on his face. The video clip resurfaced on social media and the netizens repel against the singer. The clip was a part of a promotional video created in 1984 for a concert movie, Stop Making Sense for a rock band named Talking Heads.

In the clip, Byrne is placed in an interview setup while he wore a huge suit. The musician interviewed himself by dressing up as different reporters in other parts of the screen. However, after the outrage, Byrne took the matters in his hands and went on Twitter to apologize.

He began the apology by stating that he almost forgot that he did a skit like this. However, he thanked his fans and followers to bring such work to his attention. The This Must Be the Place star went on and wrote a series of tweets further.

"To watch myself in the various characters, including black and brown face, I acknowledge it was a major mistake in judgment that showed a lack of real understanding," Byrne wrote as he acknowledged the sentiments hurt.

The singer admitted that there are crucial things that he didn't understand well and turned blind spots. Although Byrne ensured his fans that he has grown beyond such thinking and making such mistakes while he confessed that back in the days he wasn't mature enough.

He further recalled his days during American Utopia on Broadway where he acknowledged at the end of the show that he needs to change. Byrne believes that he is a changed man now. The singer concluded the series of posts and hoped that everyone would give him "understanding" and "grace".

Byrne suggested that anyone who made a mistake in the past should be analyzed with "accountability" and "honesty" while also given a chance to change and grow in the future. Given that, there are many people on social media who didn't go well with the bunch of tweets.

One of the users replied back to the singer and said that he had a good time in his days but this is the time when he is "canceled" while another person called him a supporter of a political party.
