Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on Tuesday picked California Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate for the 2020 Presidential election. In other words, if he ends up defeating Donald Trump in the election, Harris will be his vice president.

Getting picked as Biden's vice-presidential running mate makes Harris the first Black woman to be on a major-party US presidential ticket. More importantly, this gives the former vice president a partner who is all set to ensure Trump doesn't win reelection in Nov.

Following the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after a white police officer knelt on his neck for over eight minutes, there have been nation-wide demonstrations over racial justice, putting a lot of pressure on Biden to pick a Black woman as his running mate. Moreover, she is the first Asian-American on a notable presidential ticket.

Harris, 55, is a senator from California, who made her own run for the White House. In her, Biden will have an experienced, reliable politician just ahead of the final stretch of the imminent election. Taking to his Twitter account on Aug. 12, the former vice president described Harris as "a fearless fighter for the little guy."

Furthermore, he touted her as one of America's finest public servants. Harris tweeted that Biden has what it takes to unify American people because he has spent his life fighting for them. The campaign said Biden will make an appearance along with his recently announced running mate on Wednesday during an event that is slated to take place in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, Dawn reported.

Harris is expected to help assemble African Americans, which is the Democratic Party’s most loyal voting public. It is worth noting that Harris is only the second Black woman to be elected as a US senator in history. The first downtrend in Black voter turnout four years ago led to Democrat Hillary Clinton's loss to Trump.

Biden, without an iota of doubt, needs supports of the Black voters, who rescued his foundering campaign in South Carolina's primary in Feb., if he wants to stand a chance to beat Trump. Black voters are expected to play a vital role in the upcoming election, especially in battleground states including Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, where Trump narrowly succeeded during his first presidential run in 2016.

Aside from that, their support will be crucial in Republican-leaning southern states such as Florida and Georgia. Biden has served as vice president under the first Black United States President, Barack Obama, who tweeted saying Harris is more than prepared for the job.
