When the actor was shooting for 12 Monkeys, a Sci-fi movie to portray the character of a mentally off-kilter effectively. Terry Gilliam, director of the movie brought a psychiatric consultant on the set for Pitt named Dr. Lazlo Gyulai.

Dr. Gyulai is a director of the program related to Bipolar Disorders in the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and wanted to help the makers of the movie to ensure the portrayal of the psych ward patient is authentic rather than a stereotype.

The doctor was interviewed in 2005, told The New York Times that many filmmakers make such patients look like lunatics while many patients who are suffering from mental illness are not crazy at all. He further told that such patients are usually into mood disorders or depression.

Gyulai explained that people frequently who aren't expert on this subject, find difficulty in grasping the human dimension of the problem. It was the guidance of the professional that helped Pitt nailed the character.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Gilliam told PeopleTV’s Couch Surfing in 2019 that Pitt was always laconic. The director further mentioned how Pitt worked really hard and made a connection with this unconventional character immediately.
