Social media is abuzz with controversy following Kate Middleton's 2023 Eurovision performance, with some observers suggesting that the Duchess of Cambridge borrowed heavily from Meghan Markle's fashion playbook. Middleton made a surprise appearance at the Eurovision Song Contest final, donning a blue silk one-shouldered Jenny Packham dress and delivering a pre-recorded piano performance that wowed the audience.

However, the striking resemblance between Middleton's dress and the one Markle wore to the previous year's NAACP Image Awards has triggered a wave of accusations on Twitter. Supporters of Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, pointed out that both gowns were one-shouldered, blue, and featured similar chiffon detailing.

Critics argued that Middleton was mirroring Markle's fashion choices too closely. One Twitter user claimed, "Meghan lives on in Kate's head rent-free," implying a lack of originality on Middleton's part. Others branded Middleton's alleged imitation as "pathetic" and "creepy," suggesting it reflected a hidden admiration for Markle within the royal family.

However, a significant number of royal enthusiasts defended the Duchess of Cambridge, dismissing the accusations as baseless. Detractors of the theory argued that the two dresses were not that similar beyond their color. One supporter stated, "Kate Middleton, [the] Princess of Wales [has] charisma, [a] unique style... No need to copy Meghan Markle." Others insisted that Middleton, seen as a "class act," would not need to emulate Markle's style.

Interestingly, some observers suggested that neither duchess was particularly innovative in their fashion choices. One Twitter user noted, "Both of them just simply have very basic middle-aged rich women styles."

Markle's attention-grabbing one-shouldered gown, created by New York designer Christopher John Rogers, was a hit at the 2022 NAACP Image Awards where she and Prince Harry received the President's Award.

Meanwhile, Middleton's Eurovision dress was seen by some as a tribute to Ukraine, given its color matching the Ukrainian flag. She performed alongside the Ukrainian hip-hop band, Kalush Orchestra, last year's Eurovision champions. Her performance was staged in the Crimson Drawing Room of Windsor Castle and was the result of a collaboration with composers, arrangers, and musical directors Joe Price and Kojo Samuel.
