Republican Secretary of State Colin Powell is the latest entrant in the list of former top military officials that claim Donald Trump has drifted away from the Constitution citing the president's response to the nation-wide protests triggered by the death of George Floyd in the police custody. The retired general reminded that the United States follows a Constitution, adding that Trump has moved away from it.

Powell, who served under President George W. Bush remarked during an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper on State of the Truth. Powell's statement adds to the list of disapprovals made recently by former top officials, who have strongly criticized Trump's strongman approach to those demanding justice against racial discrimination after a a black man named George Floyd died at the hand of a white police officer.

Confirming that he is proud of what former top officials have said about the president's response to the protest, Powell said he opted not to criticize Trump by releasing a public statement because he believed he had already displayed his disapproval for Trump by voting against him back in 2016. Powell deemed the protest surrounding Floyd's death as the biggest protest movement he has seen in his life.

Aside from that, Powell said the protest also indicated that the United States is getting wiser and aren't willing to put up with racism anymore. The retired general also called out Republican lawmakers for remaining tight-lipped on the president's response to the nationwide unrest. He recalled the senators going into the chambers during the protests, ignoring reporters' questions as if they had nothing to say.

During the impending election, Powell said he is planning to vote for Democrat Joe Biden for president just like he did in 2016. The former Republican official admitted that he is close to Biden as far as social and political matters are concerned, adding that he has worked with him for about 35-40 years.

Explaining why he doesn't want Trump to be reelected, Powell noted that Trump did not turn out to be an effective president and that he lies all the time. Powell said the country must embrace these protests and understand what needs to be done to get out of the situation the country is in at the moment.

Moreover, Powell told Tapper that Americans can do it and they ought to do it. Following his interview, Trump slammed Powell on Twitter, calling the former official a real stiff, and describing Biden as another stiff. The president also accused Powell of being responsible for getting America into the war with the Middle East. The former secretary of state, on the other hand, said the nation's moral standing on the world stage has been demonized under Trump's leadership.
