In the coming days, the pandemic is expected to claim over 100,000 lives in America, surpassing an April prediction of 60,000 total deaths and coinciding more with an earlier projection that hinted at deaths in the six-figure range. Dr. Deborah Birx says we can minimize the risk simply by following social distancing guidance and wearing a mask in public places.

In an interview with Fox News Sunday, Birx pointed out that droplet experiments provide ample scientific evidence that shows masks prevent droplets from reaching others, realizing that people across the nation will restlessly be waiting to go out over the holiday weekend.

White House coronavirus task force coordinator Birx urged Americans to wear masks in public places where social distancing cannot be practiced, showing respect for each other and caring for each other. She explained wearing masks is a critical part of stepping outside amid the pandemic as scientific evidence has already proved wearing masks is important to prevent droplets from reaching others.

New Jersey, California, and some other states have opened up beaches, but footages show people visiting the currently accessible beaches aren't paying heed to social distancing guidance and therefore increasing chances of COVID-19 surge. Birx noted that while it is important for people to interact, it is equally important for them to wear masks when they are less than 6 feet and try maintaining 6 feet distance whenever possible.

Birx said that being outside is helpful as the sun plays a vital role in killing the virus, however, people should also bear in mind that they need to maintain the distance and act responsibly. Even President Trump who continues facing strong criticism for not wearing a mask in public was spotted wearing one during a Ford plant tour in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Referring to the current death toll exceeding previously-predicted projection of 60,000 deaths, Birx explained that the last month's prediction relied on just one model among a slew of other models the White House follows, including the one that projected about 100,000 to 240,000 fatalities. Their focus, Birx added, is to leave no stone unturned in a bid to limit hospitalizations and more mortality.

If an aggressive development process is adopted for the vaccine, Birx said we could come up with a vaccine about eight months earlier than what would usually be the case. They are producing specific vaccine candidates ahead of the estimated time and waiting with bated breath for the results of tests. If one of these alternatives proves to be effective in treating COVID-19, they will have a head start on manufacturing, Birx added.

At the moment, they are manufacturing the most hopeful candidates, ensuring that they can produce enough vaccines for the people of America.
