“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive.” This is how Will Smith began his public apology to Chris Rock.

On Monday, the now-Oscar winner released a statement on Instagram, apologizing for his actions at the awarding ceremony. Page Six released a report on the matter, detailing what the “King Richard” actor had to say.

Smith admitted that his behavior at Sunday’s event was “unacceptable and inexcusable.” He, also, acknowledged that “jokes at [his] expense are a part of the job,” although he argued that a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s medical condition was “too much” for him to bear, causing him to react “emotionally.”

After realizing his mistakes, he made a public apology to Chris Rock, writing “I was out of line and I was wrong.” He noted that he is “embarrassed,” adding that his “actions were not indicative of the man” he wants to be, and “there is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

Will Smith consequently apologized to “the Academy, producers of the show,” and the public who witnessed the now-infamous slap on stage. He, also, said the same thing to the Williams family, as well as his “King Richard” family.

The “Aladdin” actor ended his post by emphasizing that he “deeply regrets” what he did, noting that his “behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey” for everyone. He concluded that he is a “work in progress” before signing his name, “Will.”

The post features a photo of his statement on a black background. The actor wrote the same content as the caption, though he appears to have disabled the comment section.

It has since amassed over 5.3 million likes.

Will Smith published his apology hours after the Academy released an official statement about what happened and its next course of action. A separate report from Page Six stated that the organization “condemns the actions of Mr. Smith” at the awarding ceremony, which took place on Sunday evening.

In the same announcement, the Academy revealed that it has “officially started a formal review” surrounding the actor’s actions. It noted that it will “explore further actions and consequences” in accordance with the organization’s Bylaws, Standards of Conduct, and California law.

Reports asserted that Will Smith is likely to be disciplined. But, it is claimed to be “less likely” for the Academy to revoke his Best Actor gong for his lead role in “King Richard.”

The publication, later on, shared that the Academy may likely arrive at a final decision in its next board meeting.
