A large number of COVID-19 hospitalizations in the state surprisingly include those who refrained from stepping outside their homes too often. Cuomo made this shocking revelation on Wednesday. During the daily briefing, he spoke about this preliminary data which came from hundred New York hospitals and involved nearly 1,000 patients.

Describing it as a “shocking” finding, the governor revealed that 66 percent of those who were rushed to hospitals due to coronavirus-related emergencies were people who were holed up in their residences. The data also showed that 18 percent of new admissions were from nursing homes, CNBC reported.

Aside from that, less than 1 percent of new admissions were from jail or prison, 2 percent of these patients were among the homeless population, 2 percent from other congregate facilities, but 66 percent of the people stayed at home, which Cuomo said was shocking for them. Initially, they thought these people were taking public transport but that wasn't the case because these people "were literally at home," he explained.

About an alarming 84 percent of the hospitalized cases included people who weren't even commuting to work through public transit, personal vehicles, car services, or even walking. Cuomo noted that most of these people were either unemployed or retired and about 73 percent of the recently admitted people were over age 51.

According to the data, people who are hospitalized are primarily from the downstate region in or around New York City. Moreover, these people were mostly those who aren't working, traveling, and are not essential employees. Cuomo also pointed out that most New York City cases involve minorities, and about half of these people are either Hispanic or African American.

Health officials were expecting most of these admissions to include essential employees such as health-care workers or city staff, who are still traveling to work. It all comes down to what a person does to avoid the infection as government and society have already done everything it could, keeping everything closed. "Now it’s up to you," Cuomo added.

New York's hospitalization rate has shown a continuous decline at a painfully slow rate, Cuomo said. About 600 infected people were still admitted to hospitals on a daily basis, although that number has come down drastically. While data suggests coronavirus is gradually declining in New York, the new survey results don't coincide with Cuomo's earlier assurances that self-isolation is an effective way to prevent transmission.
