Fantasy television series His Dark Materials has announced that it will start production on its third and final season in 2021.

The Hollywood Reporter says that the television adaptation of the Phillip Pullman books will start shooting on its third season in the following year. The HBO and BBC show will be airing the finale of its second season in the coming days.

The upcoming third season is expected to cover the events in The Amber Spyglass, the final book in Pullman’s trilogy. It will consist of eight episodes and have Dafne Keen returning to play the lead character, Lyra.

Variety quotes a number of executives involved in the production, such as HBO Programming executive vice president Francesca Orsi, who described being able to make the adaptation as a “tremendous privilege.”

BBC Drama commissioning editor Ben Irving called the experience of making His Dark Materials “a joy” and said that they were “thrilled” to be able to continue making the show and to bring it to a conclusion.

Meanwhile, executive producer Jane Tranter described the show as a personal highlight of her career. She praised production company Bad Wolf for bringing to life the Phillip Pullman novels that make up the His Dark Materials trilogy.

Another fantasy show given the green light for its final season is The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which was able to finish Part Four and is set to air on streaming giant Netflix this year.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the showrunner for The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, only had words of gratitude for Netflix. He says the streaming service gave them the freedom to tell the story they wanted to tell.

In its final season, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will be tackling the Greendale coven’s battle with the Eldritch Terrors. The show will also resolve the love story between Sabrina and Nick Scratch.

Another show that has not been as fortunate as His Dark Materials and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is One Day At a Time. The show faced its second cancellation earlier this month, after first being canceled on Netflix back in 2019.

Unfortunately, viewers of One Day At a Time did not have a satisfactory ending to the series as the fourth and final season was only able to film six episodes due to the closures brought about by the global coronavirus pandemic.

One Day At a Time was praised by critics during its run. It even went on to win at the 2019 and 2020 Emmy Awards for multi-camera picture editing.
