It’s another win for the animated feature The Croods: A New Age as the film stays atop the American box office for the third week in a row. However, because of the global coronavirus pandemic, it may have taken that position by default.

Variety reports that The Croods: A New Age brought in another $3 million on its third weekend in theaters, enough to ensure that it stays the number one film in the country. With that box office take, the film now sits on a $24.1 million total.

The publication does make a point of saying that there was no competitor for The Croods: A New Age, as no new releases have been coming to theaters. All of the other films that make up the top 10 are either re-releases or films that have been out since October.

That said, The Croods: A New Age has been performing well considering the circumstances. It’s $3 million take this week is only a short drop from last week’s $4.4 million in ticket sales. The film was also able to earn this much even with a huge swath of theaters in the United States closed because of the global coronavirus pandemic.

Deadline also points out that the box office returns for The Croods: A New Age in its third week far exceed the other films in the top 10. The second-highest earner is Half Brothers from Focus Features. The comedic drama did not even crack half a million ticket sales, ending the week with ticket sales of $490,000.

A re-release of Christmas classic Elf came in at third, with $390,000 in ticket sales. At fourth is horror-comedy Freaky, with $315,000 in ticket sales. Freaky was also one of the films to spend more than a week on top of the American box office during this pandemic.

The War With Grandpa, which has now been out for two months, came in at number five with more than $266,000 in ticket sales. Because of its longevity, the film has now earned a total of $17.96 million at the box office.

Come Play, another film to top the American box office during this pandemic, is now at the bottom of the top 10, bringing in $175,000 in its seventh week in theaters. It has now earned $9.2 million in total since its release.

The state of the global coronavirus pandemic will be instrumental in determining whether the American box office can return back to the blockbuster numbers it used to earn. According to the Dec. 13 update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are now 15,932,116 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country. The number of people that have died from COVID-19 is now at 296,818.
