Many fans are thrilled about the upcoming release of Outlander Season 6. There have been reports saying that Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, and the rest of the cast have started filming already. However, just like other shows, the shooting for the sixth installment of the historical television series has been delayed due to the perils brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. So, what are the updates now?

Outlander Season 6 will be delayed amid the present global health crisis

STARZ President and CEO Chris Albrecht previously revealed that avid followers of the show could expect more challenges, adversaries and adventures in the imminent Outlander Season 6. The next installment will delve into American history aside from the story of Jamie Fraser and Clair Fraser as they settle in the New World.

In November, Sam Heughan revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic had forced the production and management to delay its initial filming plans for its cast and crew's safety. The Scottish actor revealed, during an appearance in This Morning in June, that they were supposed to start shooting in May. He added that the script is already finished, and they already had fittings for their props and costumes.

Sam Heughan stated that Outlander Season 6 would be an epic show. However, with the current situation, devoted fans might need to wait a little longer than expected. The leading man of Caitriona Balfe hinted that the next season would definitely be worth the wait.

Will Outlander Season 6 be based on ‘A Breath of Snow and Ashes’ book?

Reports have it that the upcoming season will follow the storyline of Diana Gabaldon’s sixth book. However, it does not necessarily mean that everything will be based on the source material. In fact, executive producer Ronald Moore told Entertainment Weekly that their creative team has been trying to split and combine both the series and the book. He said he wants to be free in the writers’ room to pick and choose what to do in the series.

Outlander Season 6 is expected where the fifth installment left off. To recall, Season 5 concluded with a scene featuring Claire (Caitriona Balfe) being kidnapped and molested by Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) and his company. Jamie and his men, then, saved Claire from danger, but they failed to kill off Lionel. Marsali (Lauren Lyle), fortunately, had an opportunity to take revenge and poisoned Lionel, which caused his death.

When will STARZ start showing Outlander Season 6 following its delay?

STARZ has yet to announce the official release date of Outlander Season 6, which would have a total of 12 episodes. However, there have been reports claiming that Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe and the rest of the gang would be back to the small screens in 2022.

Meanwhile, reports suggested that a seventh installment is highly possible, especially since Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novel series is still ongoing. However, nothing is confirmed as of yet. So, everything should be taken lightly until these speculations are proven true and correct.
