Princess Diana reportedly fell in love with Dr. Hasnat Khan shortly after she divorced Prince Charles.

In the documentary Diana: Her Last Summer, royal expert Eve Pollard said that the Princess of Wales thought about relocating to Pakistan if that meant that she would be close to Khan.

While speaking with Vanity Fair, Jemima Khan revealed that Princess Diana was madly in love with Khan, and she also wanted to marry him.

Pollard added that no one expected the late royal to be so open to the idea of leaving the United Kingdom for Pakistan. And if her plans pushed through, it would’ve meant living thousands of miles away from Prince William and Prince Harry.

“The idea that the Princess of Wales was going to marry and live with the Pakistani doctor was not what we were expecting. She had long conversations with Jemima Khan, who had married Imran Khan and Diana was wondering if it was something she could do,” Pollard said.

In 1997, Princess Diana traveled to Lahore with Khan to meet his parents. However, after 18 months of secretly dating, the couple decided to call it quits.

Royal author Tina Brown said that the couple decided to end their 18-month relationship after Princess Diana incessantly forced Khan to make things public. The doctor refused to do so because he’s a private individual.

Brown said that the Princess of Wales gave her then-boyfriend an ultimatum to publicly confirm their relationship or to call it quits. Khan reportedly chose the latter.

In 2012, Khan admitted to Daily Mail that his relationship Princess Diana became too stressful for them to bear in the end. After all, it wasn’t going anywhere, but they didn’t also want to go their separate ways.

Shortly after their split, Princess Diana got into a relationship with Dodi Al-Fayed. There are claims that the mom of two just Al-Fayed to make Khan jealous.

However, Princess Diana was with Al-Fayed when they got into a car accident that took their lives. Following Princess Diana’s death, Prince Charles traveled to France to pick up his ex-wife’s remains.

He also waited until the next morning to tell Prince William and Prince Harry about what happened to their mom.
