In an unexpected interview given just hours after former President Donald Trump was found liable for sexual abuse and defamation against E. Jean Carroll, former Vice President Mike Pence downplayed the New York jury's decision, suggesting the American public is "not focused" on the case.

Pence referred to the verdict as "just one more story" centering on his "former running mate," and insisted that only "members of the national media" are "fascinated" by the development. Speaking to NBC News on Tuesday night, Pence stated, "I think that's a question for the American people but I really can't comment on a judgment in a civil case."

The former vice president continued, "I have no knowledge of those matters and I'm sure the president will defend himself in that matter." Pence went on to argue that the story is receiving attention at a time when American families are struggling, the economy is hurting, and the world is becoming increasingly dangerous.

As reported earlier, the jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse against author E. Jean Carroll in a New York City Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in 1996. Carroll was awarded $2 million for the sexual assault and an additional $3 million for defamation after Trump denied the allegations and accused the writer of fabricating the story.

Although Carroll also alleged that Trump raped her in the Manhattan department store dressing room 30 years ago, the jury did not unanimously agree on that claim.

Pence's comments came as speculation surrounding the 2024 presidential election continues to intensify. While Trump was the first Republican to announce his run for the 2024 White House in November, Pence has not yet confirmed whether he will pursue his own bid for the presidency.

In April, Pence mentioned that if he were to challenge his former boss in the upcoming election, he would make the decision public by the end of June.
