The Suicide Squad is nearing its official release and fans can’t wait to see what's stored in the upcoming superhero film. While the franchise introduces new faces on board, it still sees returning characters – including Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). Her story is one of the interesting parts of the movie and some were wondering whether she’ll be given a solo movie aside from Birds of Prey.

The Suicide Squad director James Gunn answered the question of whether or not Harley Quinn will have her own solo film in the future. During his Q&A potion on his Instagram Story, one of his followers asked if he will ever consider making a standalone movie for the character. His answer was simple, yet precise: “I definitely would yes.” This suggests that he’s interested to further expand the franchise.

However, some things should be taken into consideration before pushing the project. For instance, Robbie previously hinted that Harley Quinn may not have her solo film as she sees her working alongside her friends. In fact, even though Birds of Prey focused on her, she still joined forces with some of DC’s female characters.

Speaking to Collider in 2018, Robbie explained why it’s unlikely for Harley Quinn to have her standalone movie. She said the character needs friends and she always loves interacting with other people. She enjoys working with a group, with the actress noting “it should be a girl gang.” Hence, it might be challenging for Gunn’s part to bring her on board the big screen again.

The director also revealed why one of Harley Quinn’s tattoos was removed in The Suicide Squad. In the same Q&A portion, a fan asked him what led them to the decision of removing the Rotten tattoo and whether it will be addressed. Gunn responded that he found out both he and Robbie didn’t like it so they decided to remove it, adding that it won’t be addressed.

Meanwhile, The Suicide Squad is a standalone film and not a direct sequel to the 2016 movie, Suicide Squad. Yet, it still features some of the characters from the latter. In addition to Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney is coming back as Captain Boomerang, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Joel Kinnaman as Colonel Rick Flag. The rest are new faces in the narrative.

Idris Elba is set to play as Bloodsport, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K., John Cena as Peacemaker, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, and Steve Agee as King Shark. Also joining them are Sean Gunn as Weasel, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, Michael Rooker as Savant, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Mayling Ng as Mongal, Flula Borg as Javelin, and Pete Davidson as Blackguard.

The Suicide Squad hits theater on July 30, 2021, in the United Kingdom. It will be available on August 6 in the United States and can be streamed on HBO Max for one month starting the same date.
