Publicly breaking with President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday refused to submit to demands he opposes to the results of the election. The veep informed the boss, he has served for four years, that he does not have the authority to block the certification process of President-elect Joe Biden's win when Congress counts the electoral votes.

Trump has been pressing Pence to overturn the outcome of the presidential election, warning the vice president that it would politically "damaging" for him to not do as he says, a source familiar with the conversation told CNN. During a recently concluded meeting, Pence gently told Trump that the authority to block the process doesn't exist for him, the source added.

Pence formalized his views by sending a letter to lawmakers, informing them he lacks "unilateral authority" required to decided presidential contests. In his letter, which he tweeted on Jan. 6, the U.S. Vice President declared that he could not change the presidential election results.

Pence noted that his oath to support and defend the American Constitution restricts him from claiming unilateral authority to decide which electoral votes should be counted and which should be ignored. "So Help Me God," he wrote at the end of his letter. It was the vice president's final words before presiding over Congress's joint session to count the Electoral College votes.

A violent mob supporting Trump arrived at the US Capitol, interrupting the session. Pence was immediately evacuated from the building. Protestors objecting to Biden's victory forced themselves through the U.S. Capitol security barriers, and the Senate was put on a lockdown, Los Angeles Times reported.

Cashing in on the chaos, Trump tweeted his towering rage at Pence. He accused his vice president of not having the courage to do what should've been done to protect America and its Constitution, Associated Press reported. He went on to say that the American public demands the truth.

He refrained from mentioning his supporters that stormed the Capitol building, simply urging them to support the Capitol Police and remain peaceful, but he didn't criticize the violence. After being evacuated, Pence took to his Twitter, denouncing the violence and destruction that took place at the US Capitol, saying it must stop.

He told those involved in the violence to respect Law Enforcement officers and exit the building immediately. Despite Pence conveying his views to the president, Trump refuses to listen and continues pushing his baseless claims of massive voter fraud.
