The Electoral College elected Joe Biden as the United States' next president on Monday, officially confirming the former vice president's win in the 2020 election. Shortly after the confirmation, the President-elect declared that the rule of law, the nation's Constitution, and Americans' will prevailed over President Donald Trump's unceasing attempts to reverse the election results.

Noting that the flame of democracy was lit in the United States a long time ago, Biden said in his speech in Delaware on Monday that not even a global pandemic or an abuse of power can put that flame off. The speech was characterized by Biden's most detailed and direct defense of his victory yet, coupled with the harshest condemnation of the president's attempts to reverse the election results.

He presented a systematic list of the Trump campaign's failures in states and federal courts, and state legislatures, as well as recounts that failed to overturn the election results. He referred to the unprecedented and extreme efforts by Trump and his allies to change the election results in their favor during his speech. He also pointed out that a unanimous Supreme Court completely turned down this effort.

California's 55 electors cast their ballots around 5:30 p.m. EST to push Biden over the 270-vote threshold required to win, USA Today reported. Biden and the vice president-elect Kamala Harris received 306 electoral votes overall, while Trump garnered 232 votes. Before Biden and Harris are inaugurated on Jan. 20, the electoral votes will be counted during a special joint session of Congress on Jan. 6.

Biden's speech came just a few hours after the electors had cast their ballots, where he declared it was time to turn the page, to unite and to heal. Comparing the recently concluded election as a battle for the soul of the nation, Biden said democracy won. Americans voted, keeping their faith in the institutions to make sure the integrity of American elections remains intact, he added.

The former veep grabbed this opportunity to take a jab at Trump and Republicans who have been leaving no stone unturned in a bid to reverse the election results by trying to oppose the democratic process in an unprecedented manner, CNN reported. Lawsuits brought by the president and his allies were rejected in state and federal courts, but the opposition party did not stop making baseless claims of widespread voter fraud.
