After taking office next year, President-elect Joe Biden plans to urge Americans to wear masks for 100 days. This is a stark contrast from the approach adopted by the outgoing administration in a bid to restrict the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

In an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper, Biden said that wearing masks for just 100 days will help them see a significant reduction in the COVID-19 cases. During this joint interview with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, which is slated to air at 9 p.m. ET, Biden insisted that people will not need to wear masks forever.

Biden said he would issue a standing order that masks should be worn in federal buildings, in interstate transportation on buses and airplanes, and everywhere he has authority. The CDC ( US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) says that wearing a mask protects the person wearing the mask and those around them from transmitting the virus.

Aside from that, Biden told Tapper that he had urged Dr. Anthony Fauci to be a chief medical adviser and be a part of his COVID-19 response team when he takes office next year. Biden said the discussion happened on Thursday.

According to Constitutional experts, the POTUS does not has a legal authority to order the people to wear masks. However, Biden said he and Harris would set an example by wearing face masks, BBC reported.

A president's executive authority does not include US government property, and Biden told during the interview that he plans to use such power, by noting that he will issue a standing order that everyone should wear masks in federal buildings. It is worth noting that most public transit systems, including airports, require all passengers and workers to wear a mask.

The Trump administration has turned down American health experts' requests to make wearing masks in transportation compulsory, calling it "overly restrictive." In the interview, Biden said he would be happy to take a vaccine in public to address any concerns regarding its safety.

Biden and Trump have adopted different approaches to the coronavirus, a crisis that defined the 2020 presidential election. Trump has spoken against many of the coronavirus guidelines issued by his own administration, including wearing a mask, while the president-elect followed coronavirus guidelines during his campaign.

Trump's rejection of the coronavirus recommendations put him at odds with Fauci. While Trump loyalists consider Fauci a villain, he is widely seen as a hero on the left for his devotion to science.
