Jay-Z has been talking about his friendship with former President Barack Obama and the rest of the first family for quite some time now. While the rapper insists their friendship meant a lot to him, the 44th U.S. president it was nothing more than an acquaintanceship, rather than a group of friends texting each other.

Obama's election in 2008 proved to be a turning point in the United States as, before him, the country lacked racial diversity as far as the roster of presidents was concerned. He was more than just a president in the eye of his supporters that included athletes, actors, and politicians.

During Obama's presidency, the White House adopted arts as no other Presidents had before, and this led to him having a few unlikely friends such as Jay-Z and Beyonce. They became acquainted just before the election, but their friendship grew stronger when the first family moved to Washington, DC.

Jay-Z campaigned for Obama, while Beyonce sang her version of Etta James classic “At Last” during the inaugural ball. The duo was involved in several Obama-led policies including his social work and Michele's fitness initiatives. The couple, Jay-Z, in particular, has opened up about how much his friendship with Obama means to him.

Michelle and Beyonce have mutual respect for each other, which comes from their friendship and the work that they do. Regardless of how strong their friendship is, the ladies have teamed-up not only to help the nation but also help each other over the last 12 years.

Things aren't as simple when it comes to defining the extent and strength of Barack and Jay-Z’s friendship, CNN reports. In 2015, Jay-Z opened up about his friendship with then-President Obama, claiming that he was close with him, and spoke to him aside from his visits to the White House.

The rapper went on to claim that he and the president exchange texts on a semi-regular basis. During an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Obama spoke about the rapper’s claims, saying that he doesn't text him, or anyone else for that matter.

Admitting that he loves music and that Jay-Z is incredibly creative, Obama said he doesn't have his home number, according to CNN. Obama was often criticized for his BlackBerry during his presidency, Laughing about the idea, the former president said he would make exceptions to his policy of non-texting for the rapper.

The extent of that friendship surpassed friendly meetings with one another, but the extent of that friendship seems to be more one-sided than Jay-Z realizes. In other words, although there's a friendship between the former first family and the first family of R&B and hip-hop, determining the strength of their friendship is a little bit tricky.
