Before the coronavirus turned into a global pandemic, one of the most recognizable names to test positive for the disease is Academy Award-winning actor, Tom Hanks. Now that the pandemic has spread throughout the globe, Hanks has some words for people who refuse to wear masks.

People reports that Hanks called out people who don’t wear masks during the press conference to promote his new movie, Greyhound. Hanks said that there are just three simple things to do to stem the spread of the disease -- wash hands, social distance, and wear masks. He expressed frustration at people who still refuse to do any of the three, declaring “shame on you.”

Hanks, along with his wife Rita Wilson, would definitely know about the coronavirus as they had found themselves quarantined in Australia after testing positive for it. Hanks and Wilson were in Australia because the actor was filming an Elvis Presley biopic directed by Baz Luhrmann, playing the role of Presley’s longtime manager, Colonel Tom Parker.

In Hanks’s recollection of his coronavirus experience, he shared that even doing a 30-minute workout was exhausting for him and that he could only do less than 15 minutes of the routine. Even basic exercises and stretches were too difficult for him to do.

Wilson, for her part, had a worse experience with the disease. She shared that the fevers she would get would go as high as 102 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius. The pain she felt in her body was so severe that she could not even bear to be touched. Wilson was also unable to make use of her sense of smell or sense of taste.

After Hanks and Wilson’s revelation of their testing positive for the coronavirus, more and more celebrities have come out with testing positive for the coronavirus as well. These include news anchors Chris Cuomo and George Stephanopoulos, television host Andy Cohen, reality star Todd Chrisley, singer Marianne Faithfull, and actors Ali Wentworth, Olga Kurylenko, Kristofer Hivju, and Idris Elba.

Celebrities have also succumbed and died to the coronavirus, such as British comedians Eddie Large and Tim Brooke-Taylor, singer-songwriter John Prine, actor and dialect coach Andrew Jack, stage star Mark Blum, and celebrity chef Floyd Cardoz.

Hanks and Wilson have fortunately survived, and according to Entertainment Weekly, have been doing the same isolating and social distancing that medical professionals all over the world have recommended people do.

The actor’s call for people to wear masks is certainly timely as the numbers for the global coronavirus pandemic continues to rise all over the world. According to the World Health Organization’s situation report for July 1, there are now 10,357,662 confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide. Around the world, there are now 508,055 people who have died from the disease.
