Henry Cavill is not returning as Superman.

On Wednesday, the 39-year-old actor took the “sad news” to Instagram and shared his thoughts on the matter.

Cavill told fans and followers that he “just had a meeting” with the co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, adding that he will, “after all, not be returning as Superman.”

The actor added, “After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life.”

In October, the “Man of Steel” star confirmed he will reprise his role as Superman in the DC Extended Universe.

He posted a photo and video on Instagram to announce his return, writing in the caption, “A very small taste of what’s to come, my friends. The dawn of hope renewed."

The actor also thanked his fans and supporters for their "patience" in the same post, adding that "it will be rewarded.”

Meanwhile, although Henry Cavill noted in his Wednesday post that it is not the easiest news, he said he has “respect” for James Gunn and Peter Safran, who, according to him, "have a universe to build." He subsequently shared his wish for "them and all involved with the new universe" to have "the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”

James Gunn, for his part, confirmed the matter, as well, on his official social media account.

On Twitter, he said he and Peter Safran “have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about.” He added that they will be able to share the details of their first projects earlier next year.

In the same thread, Gunn clarified that “among those on the slate is Superman.” He shared that their “story will be focusing on an earlier part” of the character’s life in the initial stages, so Henry Cavill will not play the character.

Even so, the filmmaker said they “just had a great meeting” with the “Enola Holmes” actor, adding that they are “big fans” of him. He also stated that they “talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”

Elsewhere in Cavill’s post on Wednesday, the actor expressed his love and gratitude toward his supporters, “who have been by my side through the years.”

He said, “We can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember….. Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there.”

The “Justice League” star continued that while his “turn to wear the cape has passed,” he pointed out that “what Superman stands for never will.”

In the end, Henry Cavill stated, “It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.”
