Boris Johnson made a shocking announcement on Thursday regarding his future as prime minister of the United Kingdom.

Scandal-ridden Johnson appeared outside No. 10 Downing Street to announce his resignation from his position.

He served as prime minister starting in July 2019. And he will continue to serve as caretaker prime minister until the Conservative Party appoints a new one in the summer.

“It is clearly now the will of the parliamentary Conservative Party that there should be a new leader of that party and, therefore, a new Prime Minister. I have agreed with Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of our backbench MPs, that the process of choosing that new leader should begin now and the timetable will be announced next week,” he said in his statement.

Johnson also took the opportunity to thank those who voted for him in 2019, especially those who voted Conservative for the first time.

“The reason I have fought so hard in the last few days to continue to deliver that mandate in person, was not just because I wanted to do so, but because I felt that it was my job, my duty, my obligation to you, to continue to do what we promised,” he said.

Johnson also addressed the future prime minister of Britain in his speech. He said that he will give whoever will be appointed as much support as he could.

He ended his lengthy speech by saying that he’s saddened by his decision to resign as prime minister because it is the best job in the world.

According to reports, Johnson’s decision to quit his position was due in large part to the alleged Partygate scandal.

Around 16 gatherings reportedly took place in Downing Street during the 20-month lockdown in England.

Johnson denied any knowledge of the parties but photos and videos proved that he was in attendance during some of the gatherings.

In April, the former prime minister was also fined by the Metropolitan Police after he was found guilty of breaking the law.

Additionally, Johnson was also dragged in Conservative MP Chris Pincher’s alleged groping scandal. Initially, Pincher was just suspended from his post but he later submitted his resignation letter to Johnson.

Insiders then claimed that Johnson knew all along about the incident, but he still chose to keep Pincher as one of his allies.

All these reportedly led to Johnson’s downfall as Britain’s prime minister.
